Licences and permits in Argentina

Argentina has no national recreational licence; the province issues it, and in Patagonia the province also sets the season. Santa Cruz sells permits through SIPESQ, its online system, and Tierra del Fuego through its own digital permit platform, which also handles access reservations for the sectors it controls. In both provinces the permit is explicitly personal, compulsory and non-transferable, so each angler needs their own and it cannot be shared or passed on. Above the provincial rules sits the Reglamento General de Pesca Deportiva Continental Patagónica, the general regulation for continental Patagonian sport fishing. The other half of Argentine access is not regulatory at all: several of the best fisheries have no public road frontage and are fished exclusively through licensed lodges booked well in advance, so the permit is rarely the hard part of the trip to arrange.

When to fish in Argentina

Patagonian trout fishing is a southern-summer season, and the dates are provincial rather than national. Santa Cruz has run a licence year from October to the following September, while Tierra del Fuego's season has opened on 1 November and closed at the start of May. On the ground that means Jurassic Lake fishes across the provincial season with calm mornings and overcast days best, and the Río Grande's sea trout peak from January to March, fished in the evening and at night when the wind eases. Further north on the Paraná, golden dorado run from September to April and fish best in low, clear water early in the morning. Season dates are re-set each year, so confirm them with the province before booking anything.

What the fishing is like

Argentina gives AnglerDeck two world-famous fisheries and one that deserves to be. Jurassic Lake — Lago Strobel in Santa Cruz — is a landlocked lake producing rainbow trout of a size that has no real parallel, fished on foot, and reachable only through private lodges: there are no public roads and no facilities. The Río Grande in Tierra del Fuego is the sea-run brown trout river, similarly lodge-based. The Paraná at Paso de la Patria in Corrientes is the contrast: warm, huge, subtropical river water for golden dorado, surubí and pacú, fished from boats with guides. Catch-and-release with barbless hooks is enforced on both Patagonian fisheries.
