Licences and permits in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is really two systems. In England and Wales you must hold an Environment Agency rod licence to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel with a rod and line, and GOV.UK is explicit that this applies on private water too — angling club lakes and private fisheries included. The licence is permission to hold a rod, not permission to fish a particular water, so you still need the owner's or fishery's consent. Children under 13 do not need a licence and 13-to-16-year-olds hold a free junior one. Scotland issues no rod licence at all; instead you need a permit from whoever owns the beat, usually an estate or a District Salmon Fishery Board. The Tweed is administered separately from the England and Wales licence, and Northern Ireland is different again. Sea angling is free throughout.

When to fish in United Kingdom

British game fishing is strongly seasonal and traditional about it. The Spey fishes a spring run in April and May and summer grilse from June to August, with rising water after rain the thing to wait for. The Tweed is the autumn river — a September-to-November run that is among the best-known in Europe — with spring fish from February to April. Hampshire's Test is a chalkstream on a different calendar again: mayfly in late May and June, an evening rise through summer, and grayling into autumn and winter. Two Scottish rules shape any trip: there is no salmon fishing on Sundays, and mandatory catch-and-release applies early in the season.
